How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

“I had such an amazing wedding day with Cheryl as my makeup and hair stylist. She took a lot of care and detail to make sure my look was exactly what I wanted. Even going as far as to determine when I should wash my hair so my curls would stay in longest. My make up is as exactly what I wanted and we got there because she takes time to listen to what you want for your look. I don’t normally do a full glam look, I keep it natural in my day to day routine, but she translated that to a beautiful wedding day look. She even did touch ups for me between the ceremony and the reception. We got married in the summer and I was very hot and sweaty at the peak of the heat and she was even able to refresh my hair after it fell out from my sweat. TMI but it’s the realness of getting married in the summer in the south. The pictures speak for themselves how amazing I looked and felt. Thanks for helping make my special day so incredible.”

“My glam team was Monique and Michelle. They were amazing! It was great to get to meet them and work with them. We did a trial run and it was just beautiful and they accepted and wanted feedback from the trial. They asked for inspiration pictures and were able to achieve the look I was thinking of. As someone with naturally curly hair, looking for a hair stylist that understands and can make my hair look good was something important for me. Prior to wedding day, they asked for inspiration pictures from the bridesmaids. There were 7 girls getting hair and makeup or just one service. The stylist had schedules and we were able to have everyone done in time. We had a great morning with Michelle and Monique and we all looked so great all day long. The airbrush makeup is in fact cry proof. So glad to have found a glam team that was understanding, fun, professional, and amazing !”

Through email communication to our first trial, it felt so natural and fun and I felt like we clicked immediately. Our trial was fun and she made me feel very comfortable to express things that I liked, didn’t like, or things I may not have been comfortable with. I made a last minute color pallet change from our trial to wedding day and she was on board ready to go. My nerves were so high the day and she was able to pull me out of my anxiety and nervousness and allowed me to take any space or simply acted as a really wonderful sounding board as I was expressing any of my insecurities. She made me feel strong and beautiful and she kept her positive composure throughout the entire (long) morning. Her second artist, Sandra, was a saint and really rocked it.
