How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

How much should we tip for our wedding hair and makeup artists?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

“I booked Windy City Glam for my Sept. 2024 wedding. I only booked them for hairstyle so my review is just on my wedding day hair. I knew I wanted to have Hollywood waves on my big day, so when I found this team I knew I HAD TO BOOK THEM. I was so lucky they had my date available. They were easy to communicate with & very organized so you can easily refer back to info such as how to prep hair for wedding day, upcoming payment dates, and/or trial dates. Alex, my stylist, was sweet, accommodating, fast working but super detail oriented (everything you need for your busy morning!!!) I’m glad I did a trial for my hairstyle because that’s where we consulted on clip-in extension placement and color match. That’s also where I realized I’ll need two full bundles of clip-ins instead of one to get the full look I wanted! Trust me, do the trial! I’m extremely happy with how my hair look on my wedding day. It lasted all night long looking perfect! People were shocked that it wasn’t my real hair length because she blended everything so beautifully. (For reference my hair is shoulder length when straight) I paid to have them travel out to my wedding and I’d pay to have them come halfway around the world if I needed too! Highly recommend!!! “Honestly I don’t have one bad thing to say about the make up it was perfect, I loved the make up and hair it made me feel like a Barbie. I did the trial first, which I do recommend it, because we changed a few things from it for the wedding and that just made it exactly what I wanted. The reason why I’m giving it 4 stars it’s because of her not being based in Phoenix so it makes it less flexible. I asked her like 5 months before the wedding if she could remove just the hair of one of my bridesmaids because she got pregnant and wasn’t coming, and she said no because of the travel she already was counting with that money which I understood. Then for the trial, I got my date (which is hard to request specific dates with my work schedule ) and she canceled last minute ( in her favor it was a really good reason). Then I tried to book it the next month like we talked about and she had another issue and couldn’t travel to do it, so we didn’t have the trial until a few weeks before the wedding, which was okay but I just feel like I was being very flexible to someone that was not being flexible to me at all. And even though she said she doesn’t charge for travel fees, she did charge me 260 for the drive to one area in Phoenix to the venue, which I think it’s a little high (but I’ve never done this before so it might be normal). And my last complain is she told me she was going to give me a touch up kit for the wedding, and when I asked for it she gave me a used lipstick and some setting powder with no brush or sponge or anything, that did not help at all to retouch my make up after some tears. She probably just ran out of them. But like I said at the beginning I have zero complains about the actual make up and hair, it was perfect I do recommend her a lot if you live in LA, if you are out of her area just keep in mind there won’t be a lot of flexibility. (I put pictures of the wedding and trial )”

My make up is as exactly what I wanted and we got there because she takes time to listen to what you want for your look. I don’t normally do a full glam look, I keep it natural in my day to day routine, but she translated that to a beautiful wedding day look. She even did touch ups for me between the ceremony and the reception. We got married in the summer and I was very hot and sweaty at the peak of the heat and she was even able to refresh my hair after it fell out from my sweat. TMI but it’s the realness of getting married in the summer in the south. The pictures speak for themselves how amazing I looked and felt. Thanks for helping make my special day so incredible.”
